A very special thank you to David Smith, DS Publishing and Chris DeRuBeis, for their partnership with NYA creating an amazing afternoon and evening celebrating arts in the community.
To recognize and celebrate the artistic talents of our youth in the Las Vegas valley, David and Chris in partnership with the Clark County School District Partnership office, assisted NYA with the coordination and judging of the “What Peace Means to Me” art and essay contest. Over 90 schools were invited to participate. The fifteen student finalists selected were recognized for their art submissions and the first, second and third place winners were announced at Town Square, Las Vegas during the Imagination Celebration daytime activities. The students were introduced to six international artists who served as judges and commended them for their efforts and awarded their prizes. All 15 finalists’ art was included with the evening art auction display (see photo).
As part of a fundraising effort to benefit NYA’s selected programs including Arts in the Community Family of Unity, Community Based Health Centers and Family/Youth Education, David and Chris coordinated an art auction during the Imagination Celebration evening activities. The Brothers Ali played inspirational jazz music in the courtyard while patrons of Town Square viewed art on display. David and Chris personally donated approximately $30,000 worth of art and coordinated the contributions from other famous artists to be included in the auction. Almost all of the art was purchased during the evening with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to NYA.
NYA also thanks Town Square Las Vegas for hosting the day and evening activities, GES Exposition for the walls and their staff’s time and effort to create a wonderful display for all of the art, The Grape for wine and appetizers, Kim Flowers Talent and Development Agency, Mexico Vivo Dance Company and Lohan School of Shaolin for daytime entertainment and Las Vegas Printing Experts for flyers, posters and banners.

"Ode to Peace, Sounds of Harmony"
By Lydia Duan, 4th Grade (Kathy L. Batterman Elementary School)
To me, peace is just everyone around the world hand in hand, all filled with love and joy since peace is love and joy, no fighting, working together, and just the word peace is music to my ears with melody and harmony.
